Is it safe to use orthogonal lens?

Dr M S Ravindra
Consultant Ophthalmologist,
Karthik Netralaya, Bangalore

Q: I am a 16 years old student suffering from an eye problem for the last one year. The doctors have asked me to use orthogonal lens, which are only used at night. Is it safe to use orthogonal lens?

A:Your age is too less for any of these procedures. It is best to use glasses, and if you dont like them (indeed it is a fashion today to wear glasses!), you could use regular monthly soft lenses. After 18 to 20 yrs, you could get Lasik done, which is safe and permanent. The night wearing contact lenses have temporary effect, and the effect may not last long. They act by modifying corneal curvature, and work temporarily only for lower powers.
