Is it safe continuing Wysolone during pregnancy?

Prof. OP Garg
HOD & Senior Consultant Rheumatologist,
Dr. BL Kapur Hospital, New Delhi

Q: I am a 28 years old woman who is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for the last five years. Now I am five months pregnant and I am taking Wysolone (2 mg) every morning for the last six months. The doctor told me to continue the medicine throughout my pregnancy. Is it safe to continue Wysolone during pregnancy?

A:During pregnancy activity of rheumatoid arthritis subsides substantially otherwise also only to recur in post delivery period. So I advise you to continue Prednisolone (2 mg) in the morning as you have mentioned. It will not cause any harm in so low doses. However you have to consult rheumatologist for additional medication in post delivery period. For general care please consult your obstetrician.
