Is it not possible to do dental cleaning when on an anticoagulant?

Q: I was diagnosed with SMV and portal vein thrombosis 4 months back. The doctor administered the following tablet: Uniwarfin 5 mg, Ecosprin 75 mg. Since last month I am having a problem with my gums. The dentist advised that they could not do any cleaning until I stopped the anticoagulant. Last week my tablet dose were changed after colour Doppler test - Uniwarfin 5 mg only. I could not understand why Ecosprin was continued. Please help.

A:The advice to the person regarding having his teeth cleaned while on a anticoagulant drug - Uniwarfin is as follows:No dentist will undertake cleaning unless the INR of the patient is reduced to around one. The patient on Uniwarfin has a higher INR perhaps about two. Under medical advice he should decrease the dose of Uniwarfin for 2 days and not have it on the 3rd day when he could have his teeth cleaned. After cleaning he would slowly be put back on his original dose. Different dentists accept different values before they do cleaning. His dentist and his medical doctor should talk about this before he starts decreasing the dose of Uniwarfin.
