Is it normal to have the heart on the right side of the chest?

Dr OP Yadava

National Heart Institute,
New Delhi

Q: A few days ago, I had a physical examination done and the doctor said that she could not hear my heartbeat on the left side of my chest but on the right. Is this some sort of a heart problem?

A:Heart can be normally located on the right side of the chest also and this condition is called dextrocardia. Dextrocardia can be totally normal and is not a disease in itself. However, one must get a cardiology check up and a 2D Echocardiography to rule out any other associated defects with dextrocardia.
