Q: I am a 20 years old girl who has been diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOD) last year. I took Meprate and Ovilov for 3 months and my menstrual cycle became regular only when I took the medicines. But as it did not get back to normal after the 3 months of the course, I consulted other doctors and they advised that by next year it would normalise. Now I am under no medication but haven't got my periods for the last 7-8 months. I have gained some weight over the past few months and have developed facial acne. The cycle first got disrupted after I recovered from severe typhoid. Will this problem resolve by itself? Will I be prone to diabetes if I don't treat PCOD?

A:The advice that your periods will get to normal is incorrect. If you have PCOD, you will always have to take a Meprate withdrawal to get your periods and if you are getting overweight, then you need to go on diet restriction and a good physical activity routinely. If it does not help to loose weight you will need to take a insulin sensitiser to help you start loosing weight. There is no harm in taking Meprate or an oral contraceptive pills to regularise your periods because it will help in preventing problems happening inside the uterus in case you do not have your periods.
