Q: My wife had 2 miscarriages & was aborted at 2.5 months time in both cases. She is 4 months pregnant now. She has been is prescribed Famciclovir 250 mg for 10 days, as she was positive for CMV. Is the treatment OK? Will there be any risk to her pregnancy?

A:Several medicines, including famciclovir, ganciclovir and valganciclovir, can be used to control CMV infection.Administration of famciclovir to animals during pregnancy have not produced any adverse effect on the fetus. However the relevance of this finding to humans is not known. Hence famciclovir should be given to women during pregnancy only if benefits clearly outweigh the risks.
