Is it appropriate to use botox to treat nystagmus?

Dr Arun Mishra
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, UK

Q: I was operated for nystagmus 5 years back. Now I am fine but I have heard that nystagmus never goes. I want to know if botulinum toxin injections to paralyse ocular muscles is the right way of getting a temporary solution to nystagmus?

A:No, Botulinum toxin or botox injection will paralyse the muscles for 3 months and you will not be able to move the muscles completely. Moreover, you will be back to square one after 3 months or so. This is never done.
