Is it advisable for pregnant women to undergo LASIK?

Dr Rishi Mohan

Q: I am in my eighth month of pregnancy. I am supposed to undergo a medical examination for a higher post in quasi government organisation. My eye power is -5.00 and I wear contact lenses for the past 9 years. I understand that the organisation might demand -4.00 as specification. I was planning to undergo LASIK surgery and then take the medical exam. But I am discouraged by the fact that lactating /nursing mothers should not undergo LASIK. What should I do now?

A:It is not ideal to do LASIK for multiple reasons:1. Poor stability of the refractive power during and after pregnancy.2. Unpredictable outcomes of laser treatment due to hormonal influences3. There is risk of injury to the eye by child, post-operatively4. The medicines used may reach the baby through the breast milkMy suggestion is that you wait for 6 months following delivery.
