Q: I have high cholesterol 225 mg/dl and triglycerides 280 mg/dl at present. My VLDL is also high. How would taking cod-liver oil affect me and would it raise HDL i.e. the good cholesterol? If cholesterol levels remain in the range of 225 to 280 over a period of 7 years what harm would it cause? Please advise.

A:You have not mentioned your LDL cholesterol level, if it is more than 130 it is abnormal. Fish oil does reduce triglyceride if taken in adequate amount. At least 5 capsules of MAXEPA. However NIACIN is a more effective agent to increase HDL cholesterol and reduce triglycerides and VLDL. This should be taken under a doctors prescription.
