How to make a child study on his own?

Q: I have a child around 10 years. He is good at studies. But at the same time, he is not doing the studies on his own. How to make him study on his own? Can you please tell me how to handle him better, when he is emotional?

A:Though you have not provided enough details, it seems that you have only one child who is sensitive and over-dependent. You as parents must introspect and see where you can make changes in your own handling of the child. Do not expect him to become independent suddenly. Gradually encourage even small efforts at working on his own. You will need to supervise and not withdraw all support. Identify areas where he is emotional. Use reasoning and firmness in dealing with emotional issues but provide a strong sense of security. Children learn best from observing good parental examples so show emotional restraint yourselves.
