Q: I am a diabetic and have a one week old baby girl. Before delivery I used to take insulin 18 units a day. After child birth, doctors asked me to stop insulin. My problem is that I cannot produce enough for my baby . What should I do or take to generate adequate milk? I am getting mentally very upset as I cannot feed my baby according to her need. Please advise. Mrs. Debjani Kumar bikash_k@vsnl.net

A:Your inability to produce adequate milk has nothing to do with being a diabetic. To try to increase milk production, feed your baby frequently and eat a normal, balanced diet. Increasing your fluid intake should also help and you should start to get adequate amount of milk in a week or so. You could also discuss with your Gynaecologist if you could take a medication such as Lactare, to help increase milk production.
