How should I take care of fungal infection in the groin?

Q: I am 22 years old. I am suffering from skin infection on my upper thighs for the past 5 years. I have taken treatment several times. I get a sticky and bad smelling secretion. Doctor prescribed candiderma cream. The infection was cured a bit but it never disappeared completely. I have also applied itchguard. Now the infection has covered the scrotal skin and the skin around the anus also. The colour of the skin is black now. There is no itching and no secretion now. This is really embarrassing me. I am looking for some oral medications now. Its cumbersome applying creams etc. Please advise.

A:You are most likely suffering from a fungal infection called Tinea cruris .The rash has a scaly raised red border that spreads down the inner thighs from the groin or scrotum. It can be very itchy.Tinea cruris often recurs after apparently successful treatment. To reduce the chance of reinfection:

  • Dry the groin carefully after bathing using a separate towel.
  • Do not share towels, sheets or personal clothing.
  • Avoid wearing occlusive or synthetic clothing.
Oral antifungal medications may be required for a fungal infection if:
  • It is extensive or severe.
  • It resists topical antifungal therapy.
  • It affects hair-bearing areas
Oral medications suggested are:
  • Griseofulvin
  • Fluconazole
  • Ketoconazole
  • Terbinafine
  • Itraconazole
Please check the dose with your local dermatologist.
