How do I get rid of swelling in the eyelids?
Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, UK
Q: I am a 33 years old male having persistent swelling in my eyelids. After two days of the swelling, the eyes get swollen with yellow gel and this gets treated in its own in another three days. The cycle begins again after some time. I am taking Chloramphenicol eye capsule. But this hasn''t helped me much. Am I on the right mode of treatment?
A:This is frequent infection in the eyelids. The eyelids contain lots of glands, which produce various liquids, to lubricate the eyes and keep the surface smooth, comfortable and makes you see well. If and when you are tired, which may be more so when you are straining your eyes or if you need glasses and/or not wear proper correction, you tend to rub your eyes and that produces infection like stye, blepharitis etc. Do not rub your eyes if you can help it and occasionally clean your eyelids with cotton bud soaked with baby shampoo. Also get your eyes checked and wear glasses if you need them. You should not use antibiotics for more than two to three weeks at a time.
