How can the presence of kidney stones be confirmed?

Q: Few days ago, I had severe pain in the right side of my back and my doctor asked me if I had a stone in the kidney. My ultrasound and x-ray showed nothing but now when I have stopped the treatment, the pain has started again? Is it due to the kidney stone?

A:80 % of kidney stones are radio opaque and are visualised in a good x-ray of the abdomen. Non radio-opaque stones as well as radio-opaque stones are also visualised in a good ultrasound of abdomen-KUB except very small stones, which could be missed on ultrasonography. Non-contrast CT abdomen is the best way to confirm or rule out a stone in the urinary tract. The pain in the right side of back may have other causes as well.
