How can I manage my anxiety?

Q: I am a 19 years old college student living in a hostel. I am suffering from anxiety for the past few weeks. I never used to worry about anything, but now I am worrying about the most trivial things. My mind and thoughts are all messed up. Due to anxiety, I am suffering from diarrhoea and eating problems for the past two weeks. I am unable to consult a psychiatrist, as I cannot afford it. How can my anxiety be managed?
A:You are probably right in identifying that you are suffering from anxiety. The reason you have given for this anxiety is one that may take some time for you to come to terms with. However, the anxiety can be managed better right away. I would strongly recommend that you take someone into confidence like a good friend with whom you can talk openly about the way you are feeling and your confusions. Keeping thoughts and feelings pent up can often aggravate anxiety. In addition to this, as difficult as it may seem, you have to distract yourself by engaging in neutral activities and reducing the amount of time you spend thinking about these issues. As for your appetite, eat small but frequent meals. You can expect that in a few days these steps will help you feel better. If these symptoms persist, then I would suggest that you consult a doctor.
