Q: I am 22 years old male having penile curvature since childhood. It causes pain in penile shaft after masturbation sometimes. I consulted the doctor with my photos in erect state and flaccid state but did not find any plaque or scar. Even then he suggested surgery for it, since in later life I might find intercourse difficult. Does surgery help in getting straight erections? Can it lead to impotence? Is this surgery complicated?
A:Penile curvatures are common, and may be congenital (by birth) or acquired (due to plaques and pathologies later in life). As examined by the Urologist earlier, your curvature seems like a congenital one. I can assure you that there is no penis, which is straight geometrically. Only those curvatures need to be corrected which preclude intercourse. Nesbit's and plication procedures are very effective in correcting the curvature though such procedures may result in slight shortening of penis. The procedures are straight forward and have little complications in hands who are doing such procedures regularly.
