Q: My wife is taking Primolut-N for delayed menses for the last three days but her menses have yet not started. Today her urine report reveals that she has conceived. I like to know if we can keep this fetus after consuming 10 tab. of Primolut-N? Is there any adverse effect of this medicine on the fetus i.e. any possible deficiency in child due to Primolut-N? If yes, what are the means available for abortion today? Her date of L.M.P. was 2.12.2004.
A:Before giving norethisterone (Primolut-N), it is mandatory to test for pregnancy since it is not allowed to be given during pregnancy. Foetal exposure to Primolut-N can result in malformation of the baby, though the chance is pretty small. One can continue with pregnancy but it will be necessary to undergo periodic, regular ultrasound test at short intervals (say every month) to monitor the development of the baby, as an abundant precaution.
