Does consuming more sugar lead to diabetes?

Q: One of my relatives adds very less sugar wherever required. She says that she is taking preventive measures for diabetes. She doesn't have diabetes though. Is she under a misconception that consuming sugar will lead to diabetes? Is there any truth in her notion?

A:Sugar consumption does not lead to diabetes. Less sugar intake may help in weight reduction thus help in preventing Diabetes. As a healthy food practice, it is good idea to take less sugar.
