Do I have H1N1 flu?

Dr Monica Mahajan
Associate Director,
Internal Medicine,
Max Hospital, New Delhi

Q: I am a 20 years old man having high fever (103 degree F), severe cold, running nose, sore throat, cough for the last 2 weeks. The doctor told me that it is H1N1 flu. He advised me to take rest for 2-3 days and some tests like platelets, TLC, DLC. He said I will be fine in 4-5 days and there is nothing to worry about. I am taking Parabig, Ceftas CV, Yogut and Panfast DSR. What should I do? Please advise.

A:Most people are suffering from seasonal flu at this time of the year. It needs symptomatic treatment, rest and good hydration. There has also been an increase in the cases of HINI infection in the past few days. Definite indications for doing the H1N1 test would include worsening symptoms with chest congestion/pain/breathlessness, underlying diseases including respiratory disorders like asthma, COPD, diabetes, renal disease, pregnant women, contact with H1N1 cases. In others, doing the test is optional. If you are feeling better, you need not worry.
