Q: I am suffering from massive disc prolapse and I am advised to undergo microscopic surgery as soon as possible in Apollo hospital. Is it advisable to undergo such a surgery at this young age of 22 years? Is there any alternative to surgery?
A:Patients with massive disc prolapse can be treated by conservative methods which include rest, muscle relaxants and regular exercises. If after a period of six weeks of performing these methods, the pain doesnt subside then hemay need to undergo surgery for the prolapse, if the basic complaint is referred leg pain. Any form of surgery however will not guarantee complete long lasting pain relief since the pain may recur later on.
