Q: I am a 23 years old female with an ovarian cyst measuring 8.69x4.69 cm. Can it be treated with medicines? I am unmarried and do not want to go for surgery. Please help.

A:An ovarian cyst, which is nearly 9 cm, will need surgical removal. I am assuming that it looks a simple cyst on ultrasound scan. Unfortunately, there is no medicine, which can treat the ovarian cyst. The best way to remove it is by laparoscopic surgery i.e. keyhole surgery. This has clear advantages over open method. Smaller cysts can be managed conservatively i.e. without any need for surgical treatment. However, before attempting removal, your doctor should also do some blood test to be reasonably sure that it is indeed a benign cyst. Removal of cyst should not affect your reproductive performance especially if removed laparoscopically. Therefore, I do not see any reason for you to worry about the prospects after marriage.
