Can my son's lazy eye be corrected?

Q: My son has a lazy eye, which was detected 3 years back. Doctor advised for patching but he was not regular for that. Now he is 15 years old and his left eye vision is 6/18 with axis 110 cyl + 1.00 sph + 2.50. His right eye vision is 6/6 with + 0.5. Is it possible to correct his vision?

A:Amblyopia treatment gives maximal results in the first 5-7 years of life. After this period is over, due to plasticity of the nervous system, patching treatment etc., do not help in improving vision. Since the patient is already 15 years old, it will be difficult to improve his vision. However, if highly motivated, he can consider patching treatment (using a contact lens on the right eye), under supervision of an ophthalmologist.
