Q: I am a 28 years old male suffering from the problem of kidney stones for the last two years. It happens once in every three quarter a year. I drink plenty of water every day (3 litres). On previous 3 occasions, scanning was done and it was found that the kidney stones are located either inside the kidney or in the ureter tube to the bladder. The stones had a size of 3 to 4 mm. The doctor has prescribed these medicines - Amifru, Urimax and Ston1 syrup. How can kidney stone be treated permanently? Can special diet help control the formation of kidney stones?
A:Unfortunately there is not enough information to answers all your concerns. Some types of stones do run in families. Treatment of kidney stones depends on type, size location the stones. You need to get 24 hour urine tests (for Sodium, Creatinine, Oxalates, Cystine, Calcium, Phosphorus, urea, uric acid) in addition to basic Urine analysis to look for PH and Crystals. If you happen to pass a urine stone, collect it and store it for analysis. Based on the test results you will get specific dietary instructions and specific medications to prevent further recurrences. You need to continue to drinking 3-4 litres of water a day. Follow closely with nephrologist who can help diagnose your condition and give specific instructions.
