Can a tooth be extracted during pregnancy?

Dr Bela Jain
Consultant, Orthodontist,
Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi

Q: My wife is suffering from severe tooth ache. This is because of the growth of a wisdom tooth, which is covered by the gum. Since she is pregnant, the doctor has advised not to remove the tooth. If at all they have to extract the tooth, they have to cut the gum, which is not advised. This happened once during her 3rd month of pregnancy and she took Fepanil for fever and Roscillin 250 mg (Ampicilin) tablets morning and evening as per doctor's advice. She felt better after taking this. Now she is in her 7th month of pregnancy. This pain usually comes at night. She feels better after taking the medicine. But the pain starts again after sometime. Are these medicines safe for the baby? What is more suitable for her to take during this period?

A:The tooth can usually be safely extracted in the second trimester of pregnancy. The final decision will be that of the treating Gynaecologist and the treating Dental Surgeon. The gum can be safely cauterized at this point of time.
