Can a kidney transplant affect my chances of taking up a bank job?

Dr Ashutosh Singh
Consultant Nephrologist,

USA

Q: I am 22 years old and underwent a kidney transplant earlier this year. I am totally fit now with normal renal functions. I want to appear for Bank PO examinations but I fear that my past history of the kidney disease can hamper my chances of being selected in the interview, as the recruiters might underestimate my capabilities of working with full potential. Is it possible that I can be rejected on this basis? Are there any provisions for not allowing transplant patients for such jobs?

A:A recipient of a kidney allograft (transplanted organ) with a well functioning allograft and good overall health should not in anyway be a hindrance to performing to their utmost capability in the stated job. However, a long term healthy and a successful event-free post-transplant course are vital for you to lead a near-normal life and perform most of the daily regular activities. This is possible only with a strict continued life-long compliance with the medications, utmost personal hygiene, overall healthy lifestyle and a regular follow-up with your nephrologist for health maintenance visits. I am not aware of any clause or a provision which would disqualify you from applying for the concerned job.
