Are vitreous floaters harmful?

Q: I had retinal detachment in both eyes and was diagnosed to be a long pending case. I got operated on my right eye and, according to the surgeon, it has got better chances of revival. Although I iam able to see for the better part after the operation, sometimes a few black spots do appear in front of my eyes which are quite disturbing. My question: Is the presence of these spots normal and what are my chances of full recovery ?

A:The spots being visualised with right eye are called vitreous floaters and are a common phenomenon. They are completely harmless though can be disturbing (visually) at times. They are commonly seen in myopia individuals, old age and following vitreoretinal/retinal detachment surgeries.Recovery is governed by many factors such as extent of retinal detachment,duration of detachment, macular involvement etc.
