Q: What are the vitamins and minerals necessary for erythropoiesis?

A:Red cell production (erythropoiesis) is primarily governed by the action of the hormone erythropoietin (EPO) produced in the kidney in response to low tissue oxygen tension. Other necessary factors include iron, folic acid, vitamin B12, pyridoxine, proteins (certain amino acids) and zinc.
