Are piles and varicose vein co-related?

Dr Francis Seow-Choen
Associate Professor, Mt. Elizabeth Medical Centre, Singapore

Q: I am a 23 years old male. For the last one year, I am feeling the presence of some extra mass just above the anus and around the anal aperture when I pass stools. But I don't have any pain or bleeding as in piles. Is it piles or something else? Are piles and varicose vein co-related? How can I avoid piles?

A:Piles are normal blood vessels in the anal canal, varicosities are abnormal blood vessels caused by increased pressure in the intestinal venous system. Piles are normally aggravated by bulky and large stools contrary to many expert opinions.
