Are oral contraceptives completely safe?

Q: I am planning to get married in a month. My friends say that in their experience if contraceptives are used after marriage (before first child) it will create a disorder in the female menstrual cycle. When it is decided to have the child after say one year, it will not be easy to conceive. I am confused. Please clarify if I can use condoms and plan my first child or else it is advisable to start the sex without any contraceptive. Ramakrishnan, Kuwait

A:The use of condoms as a contraceptive is in no way going to interfere with the future pregnancy. Another option could be your wife taking the contraceptive pill once the doctor clears her for the same.
