Contrary to earlier signs that women on the pill have a higher risk of heart disease, a recent review found no link between heart attacks and oral contraceptive pills.
The association between combined oral contraceptives (OC) and the risk of heart disease has been intensively studied but the conclusions have been controversial. While progestogen-only contraceptives (POC) are commonly used worldwide, their impact on cardiovascular diseases is poorly investigated and remains unclear. To study the same, researchers analysed six previous studies that examined heart attack risk in women on progestin-only birth control. The studies included more than 1,800 women from France aged 16 to 44 years on birth control and compared those to women not taking the hormone pills.
The analysis showed no increase in the heart attack risk with POC use. This result was similar according to the route of administration, including implant, injectable, and oral POC.
Since the above results are based on limited data, further investigations are needed, especially among women at high risk of having a heart attack.
