A large waist circumference has often been linked to a higher risk of developing health problems including diabetes and heart disease, independent of overall weight and body mass index (BMI). To explore the association between waist circumference and the risk of early death, researchers followed 48,500 men and 56,343 women, aged 50 years or older for nine years. All the participants had completed health questionnaires concerning their medical histories and their weight and waist size statistics were recorded. During the follow-up period of 10 years, 9315 men and 5332 women died.

It was found that men who had a waist size of 47 inches or more had double the risk of dying early as compared to men with the lowest waist size. The same risk was observed among women with a waist size of 42 inches or more. Irrespective of BMI, the researchers found that having a large waist raised the risk of an early death.

The study indicates that a larger waist size is linked to a higher risk for dying early from heart disease, respiratory disease and cancer.
