Physical intimacy not just adds to your sense of gratification but also makes you live longer, reveals a recent study. According to the researchers from University of California in San Francisco, women can live longer if they have sex at least once a week. The team analysed physical intimacy, partner support or conflict, overall relationship satisfaction and stress in 129 mothers who were in long-term relationships. In order to determine their telomere length, blood samples were collected during the study. Telomeres are the ends of our DNA strands that protect our genetic data. The researchers aimed to set a link between shortened mortality and decreasing length of telomeres in women.
The initial study found that women who had sex during the course of the week reported to have significantly longer telomeres. These protective end caps on our DNA can also determine our ageing process. Moreover, it was found that other selected parameters, like relationship satisfaction, stress and partner support or conflict, did not affect the length of the telomeres in women.
Scientific Reasons
According to researcher, Tomas Cabeza de Baca, "Shortened telomeres may contribute to chronic degenerative diseases and premature mortality." He further added, "Sexual intimacy may dampen the effects of stress by down-regulating stress response systems and up-regulating immune response. Over time, these patterns of stress function should result in longer telomere length". These revelations were published in the journal 'Psychoneuroendocrinology'.

In other words, longer telomeres mean slower cellular ageing and therefore a longer life. This study also shows that women can slow down ageing regardless of whether they are sexually satisfied in their relationship.
According to researchers, involved in the study, longer telomeres are also indicative of stronger immunity, which means that having sex periodically can also boost your immune system keeping you safe from deadly health hazards.
Research on the advantages of having sex is not a recent thing in the academic realms and there have been many researchers and studies that confirmed that a good sex life may help possess a healthier and happier life ahead.
