Men with obstructive sleep apnoea are more vulnerable to frequent urination at night, a condition called nocturia. Obstructive sleep apnoea is a common problem in, which soft tissues in the back of the throat temporarily collapse during sleep causing brief moments during which the patient stops breathing. The disorder can cause daytime sleepiness, and may be effectively treated with a breathing device that pushes air into the throat to prevent the tissues from collapsing. To assess the prevalence of nocturia in association with obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome (OSAS), researchers from Japan studied 73 men with OSAS. The participants were classified according to the frequency of night-time urination and age: younger than 50 years or 50 years and older.Thirty participants (40 percent of the total) were found to have nocturia. The risk of nocturia was directly related to the severity of sleep apnoea and the association was particularly strong in patients younger than 50 years of age. Other voiding symptoms were not associated with nocturia in these patients.Further studies are needed to look at the reasons for the association between sleep apnoea and increased risk of nocturia in men.
