Intense exercise training can help normalise muscle metabolism in people with type I diabetes, which could result in clinically important health benefits.Researchers from Australia investigated sprint - training effects on muscle metabolism during exercise in subjects with and without type-I diabetes. They studied 8 people with type-I diabetes and 7 normal subjects, who acted as the control group. The data regarding their age, body mass index (BMI) and maximum oxygen uptake was collected. All the subjects participated in a sprint-training programme for 7 weeks and performed 4 to 10 sprints on an exercise bike 3 times a week. Muscle biopsy and blood sample of the subjects were tested for metabolites and enzymes before and after the exercise. In people without diabetes, high-intensity training can help reduce breakdown of glycogen (a carbohydrate used to store energy in the body) in future bouts of intense exercise. And while lactate accumulates in the muscles with strenuous exercise, leading to fatigue and pain, training can help reduce this accumulation.Prior to training, most of the study parameters were the same in the two groups except for increased lactate accumulation in the muscles of diabetics following exercise. This accumulation correlated with their blood sugar levels. Following 7 weeks of sprint training, diabetics seemed to burn or oxidise fat more readily while accumulating less lactate in their muscle tissue. They suffered no adverse effects of intense exercise. However, some of the participants had poor blood glucose control. The researchers concluded that high-intensity exercise training is well tolerated and the oxidative adaptations to this training may confer clinically important health benefits to young patients with diabetes.
