A few cups of coffee may protect you from cardiovascular diseases and help you live longer than non-coffee drinkers.Coffee consumption has often been linked to various beneficial and detrimental health effects, but few studies have assessed its relation with mortality. So, to investigate the association between coffee consumption and mortality from cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer and other causes, British researchers studied 41 736 men for 18 years and 86 214 women for 24 years. None of the participants had a history of CVD or cancer at the beginning of the study. During the follow-up, 6,888 men and 11,095 women died. After adjustment for age, smoking, and other CVD and cancer risk factors, it was found that men and women who regularly drank a few cups of coffee each day were slightly less likely to die during the study period. The findings were attributed to a lower risk of death from cardiovascular disease.Among women, those who drank at least two to three cups per day were one-quarter to one-third less likely to die of heart problems or stroke than women who did not drink coffee. For men, a protective effect emerged only with higher levels of coffee consumption, at least four to five cups of coffee per day. Though the findings do not prove that coffee makes for a healthier heart, nonetheless, the results are consistent with the beneficial health effects other research has attributed to coffee. The possibility of a modest benefit of coffee consumption on cardiovascular disease mortality needs to be further investigated, the researchers stated.
