Story Highlights

Dementia has been on a steady rise in the world. With one person getting affected with the disease every three seconds, dementia has become one of the fastest growing health burdens across the world. Surveys have revealed that 50 million people across the globe are affected with the disease are the number is expected to reach 131.5 million mark by 2050. Such surprising stats reveal the need for finding new and better ways to combat the increasing incidence of dementia. And the good news here is that scientists have come up with a treatment for the disease.

Recently, scientists found in a study that blueberry vinegar can help in devastating dementia symptoms. It was found that blueberry vinegar helped in improving short-term memory in mice affected with amnesia and suggested that that same could be experienced by humans as well.

For this study, researchers gave blueberry vinegar to mice affected with amnesia. They found that the vinegar helped in controlling the breakdown of acetylcholine and improved brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels, the protein linked to creating and maintaining healthy brain cells. To add to this, some studies also explained that the fermentation process increased bioactivity of the natural compounds.

Scientists also wished to check how the treatment affected intelligence in mice. To check this, the researchers checked animal performance in avoidance tests and mazes wherein the mice would be given a low-intensity shock in one of the two chambers.

Results also showed that the treated mice had a better performance in both tests clearly stating that fermented products such as these can improve short-term memory.

Authors of the study revealed, "Fermented products, such as vinegar, might act to preserve the phenolic compounds that are easily oxidized during food processing and that are impacted by factors such as maturity, storage, and processing."

However, researchers state that further studies are required to confirm how effective blueberry vinegar is for humans. Besides this, the vinegar has also been stated effective in strengthening the immune system and keeping your skin younger and prettier always.

This study was appears in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
