To examine the association between social stress and inflammation, researchers followed 124 Americans who were put in two different social situations. In the first situation, participants were asked to give speeches and perform mental arithmetic in front of a panel of dismissive observers. Mouth saliva was taken before and after public speaking task, so as to test the changes in the inflammatory activity. In the second session, 31 of the participants received an MRI brain scan while playing a computerised game.
It was found that those who exhibited greater neural activity during social rejection tend to have higher inflammatory activity when exposed to acute social stress. They speculated that social rejection with an inflammatory response could predispose to diseases linked to inflammation.
The findings suggest that social stress can adversely influence the body's immune system thereby resulting in diseases mediated through inflammation.
