Previous research has found a link between diabetes and poor sleep. To examine whether sleep duration and quality are associated with diabetes, researchers compared 40 people with type 2 diabetes to 531 people without the blood sugar disease. They looked at the potential links between sleep quality, blood glucose levels and other measures of diabetes control. They monitored sleep by having people wear wrist activity monitors. The participants also reported on their sleep quality.

It was found that those with diabetes who had trouble sleeping had a 25 percent higher fasting blood glucose level, a 50 percent higher fasting insulin level and an 80 percent higher insulin resistance than the normal sleepers with diabetes.

The results however could not explain whether the higher blood sugars were caused by the poor sleep or if the patients who have higher blood sugars don't sleep well or there are other factors causing that. The take-home message for those with diabetes is to pay attention to their sleep quality.
