Prostate cancer risks reduced by coffee

Contrary to popular belief, caffeine consumption has been found to be linked to reduced prostate cancer risk, according to a new Italian study. Caffeine has been commonly associated with worsening bladder and prostrate syndromes but this research seems to quash such claims.

The Department of Epidemiology and Prevention - I.R.C.C.S. Neuromed, Italy, in collaboration with the Italian National Institute of Health and the I.R.C.C.S. Istituto Dermopatico dell'Immacolata of Rome conducted a research which proposed that drinking a minimum of 3 cups of Italian-styled coffee can lower the risk of developing prostate cancer to half.

The study included a sample size of nearly 7000 men who were observed for a period of about four years. Studying their coffee habits revealed that participants having more than 3 cups per day showed a risk reduction of 53%. Coffee was prepared at high pressure and temperature in the absence of filters; the rigorous Italian method. The tests were conducted on caffeinated and decaffeinated variants but only the caffeinated coffee extracts considerably decreased cancer cell proliferation and metastasization.

Maria Benedetta Donati, Head of Laboratory of Translational Medicine said, "The observations on cancer cells, allow us to say that the beneficial effect observed among the seven thousand participants is most likely due to caffeine, rather than the many other substances contained in coffee."

This isn't the first time that caffeine intake has proven beneficial in reducing prostate cancers. A study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in 2011 had also highlighted the significantly lower risks of lethal and advanced prostate cancer in regular coffee consumers in comparison to the non-drinkers.
