Can Metformin be taken during breastfeeding?

Q: Is it safe to take Metformin for polycystic ovarian disorder (PCOD) while a mother is breastfeeding? Will there be a problem if the menstrual cycle does not return after an year of delivery?

A:In PCOD, there is an element of sub-fertility due to resistance to insulin. Therefore Metformin is given to improve sensitivity to insulin in order to improve fertility. If a woman is breastfeeding, then the question of pregnancy should not arise till baby is weaned off from mothers' milk. Sometimes regular menstrual cycle does not resume after childbirth even in normal women for many months, more so in patients of PCOD.
