Is this the beginning of diabetes?

Q: I am a 54 years old hypertensive man and my fasting blood sugar level remains between 110 mg/dl and 120 mg/dl whereas the postprandial is between 95 mg/dl and 100 mg/dl for the last two years. I do this test every month. What could be the reason for high blood sugar level? What does it signify? The rest of my reports are normal; HbA1c is 6.6%. How should I manage this? I had done a glucose tolerance test, which revealed impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). My weight is 114 kg. Please advise.

A:The issue is pre-diabetes state. Your fasting is not normal and this range of fasting blood glucose (FBG) is called as Fasting Glucose Tolerance, which is form of pre diabetes state. This condition is high risked for full blown diabetes and around 2% of these subjects become diabetic every year but not all. Diabetes in your case is preventable by diet and exercise. There is no need to do tests every month or two months. Once in 3-6 months is good enough. Other important aspect is getting your lipid profile and if you find LDL >100 mg/dl then take a statin as well and Aspirin 75 mg daily. Both these medications will protect your heart. The risk of heart disease in this condition is equal to diabetes and risk of eye, kidney and nerve involvement is hardly there.
