Does my father need any medication for diabetes?

Q: My 47 years old father is suffering from high blood pressure and recently has been tested positive for diabetes. His fasting blood sugar level is 100 mg/dl, PP blood sugar – 207 mg/dl and LDL cholesterol is 63 mg/dl. He is not taking any medicines for sugar now. Earlier he used to take Aztor 10 mg cholesterol and Repace for high blood pressure. Do we need to be concerned and start giving him medicines? If yes, which one? What precautions he should take?

A:I have reviewed your father’s history. He is hypertensive and recently diagnosed diabetic.

He needs to do the following:

  1. Diet control-1600-1800 calorie diabetic diet. Avoid carbohydrate rich diet like sweets, rice, potatoes, etc.
  2. Exercise for 45 minutes to 1 hr.
If blood sugar after two weeks of strict diet and exercise control is still high then patient needs medicine for regular use, which is to be decided after complete evaluation by a doctor. He should continue Repace and Aztor.
