What is swine flu?
Swine influenza, or ‘swine flu’, is a highly contagious acute respiratory disease of pigs, caused by one of several swine influenza A viruses that cause regular outbreaks in pigs. Morbidity tends to be high and mortality low (1-4%). The virus is spread among pigs by aerosols, direct and indirect contact, and asymptomatic carrier pigs. Outbreaks in pigs occur year round, with an increased incidence in autumn and winter in temperate zones. Many countries routinely vaccinate swine populations against swine influenza. Swine influenza viruses are most commonly of the H1N1 subtype, but other subtypes are also circulating in pigs (e.g., H1N2, H3N1, H3N2). Pigs can also be infected with avian influenza viruses and human seasonal influenza viruses as well as swine influenza viruses.

The H3N2 swine virus was thought to have been originally introduced into pigs by humans. Sometimes pigs can be infected with more than one type of virus at a time, which can allow the genes from these viruses to mix. Pigs are therefore also called as “mixing vessels”, resulting in an influenza virus containing genes from a number of sources, called a ‘reassortant’ virus. Although swine influenza viruses are normally species specific and only infect pigs, they do sometimes cross the species barrier to cause disease in humans.

So far, the recent outbreak due to the new strain of influenza virus A (H1N1) has had cases reported from North America, Mexico, Spain and UK. Suspect cases have been reported from New Zealand and France and these are being investigated.
How does it spread?
It spreads in the same way as seasonal influenza – through direct contact (being within one metre of an infected person) or indirect contact (touching a contaminated surface). People usually get swine influenza from infected pigs, however, some human cases lack contact history with pigs or environments where pigs have been located. Human-to-human transmission has occurred in some instances but was limited to close contacts and closed groups of people.
What are the clinical symptoms?
Generally clinical symptoms are similar to seasonal influenza but reported clinical presentation ranges broadly from asymptomatic infection to severe pneumonia resulting in death. Patients experience high fever, cough, and sore throat, symptoms similar to typical influenza, with some patients experiencing diarrhoea and vomiting. The cases can rapidly progress to severe and unusual pneumonia.
What are the implications for human health?
People do not normally get swine flu, but outbreaks and sporadic human infections have been reported. Swine flu viruses have been reported to spread from person-to-person, but in the past, this transmission was limited and not sustained beyond three people.

Since typical clinical presentation of swine influenza infection in humans resembles seasonal influenza and other acute upper respiratory tract infections, most of the cases have been detected by chance through seasonal influenza surveillance. Mild or asymptomatic cases may have escaped from recognition; therefore the true extent of this disease among humans is unknown.
Is it safe to eat pork meat and pork products?
Yes. Swine influenza has not been shown to be transmitted to people through eating properly handled and prepared pork (pig meat) or other products derived from pigs. The swine influenza virus is killed by cooking at 160°F/70°C, corresponding to the general guidance for the preparation of pork and other meat.
What is the prevention and treatment?
There are antiviral medicines one can take to prevent or treat swine flu. There is no vaccine available right now to protect against swine flu. The spread of the viruses that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza can be prevented by:

  • Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Washing your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. You can also use alcohol-based hand cleaners.
  • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Trying to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • Staying home from work or school if you are sick.
Antiviral drugs for seasonal influenza are available in some countries and effectively prevent and treat the illness. Most of the previously reported swine influenza cases recovered fully from the disease without requiring medical attention and without antiviral medicines. Some influenza viruses develop resistance to the antiviral medicines, limiting the effectiveness of chemoprophylaxis and treatment. The viruses obtained from the recent human cases with swine influenza in the United States were sensitive to oselatmivir and zanamivir but resistant to amantadine and remantadine.
What is the risk of pandemic risk?
It is likely that most of the people, especially those who do not have regular contact with pigs, do not have immunity to swine influenza viruses that can prevent the virus infection. If a swine virus establishes efficient human-to human transmission, it can cause an influenza pandemic. The impact of a pandemic caused by such a virus is difficult to predict: it depends on virulence of the virus, existing immunity among people, cross protection by antibodies acquired from seasonal influenza infection and host factors.
Is there a vaccine for protecting humans?
There are no vaccines that contain the current swine influenza virus causing illness in humans. It is not known whether current human seasonal influenza vaccines can provide any protection. Influenza viruses change very quickly. It is important to develop a vaccine against the currently circulating virus strain for it to provide maximum protection to the vaccinated people.

(Swine Flu) Variants - Influenza A(H1N1)v - Home Remedies Suggested Remedial Measure If the allopathic interventions are delayed or are in-accessible or isolation is suggested or advised for the initial 2 or 5 days then the following option can be availed. If taken along with 'TAMIFLU' or similar drugs then a lag period of 3-4 hrs must be maintained. Persons weighing 40kgs & above, including children, can take this combination with drinking water, twice a day i.e. morning and evening, comprising of namely: (i) Tulsi Leaves (Holy Basil) (Ocimum tenuiflorum) - 2pcs (ii) Seeds of Pods - Tree Dried – Drumstick (Moringa Oleifera)- 2pcs (iii) Ginger Juice (Zingiber officinane) - 2ml : 1/2 tsp (iv) Anwla Juice (Phyllanthus emblica) – 2ml : 1/2 tsp (v) Turmeric Powder (Curcuma longa) - 1.5gm : 1/3 tsp (vi) Black Pepper Powder (Piper nigrum)- 0.5gm : 1/5 tsp ? To be taken after a light meal i.e. eating at least two biscuits or equivalent ? tsp:- tea spoon – rough estimated quantities, shall vary with the size of spoon ? Drumstick Tree/ Plant in India is generally identified as sahjan, murunga, moonga, sajina and more specifically in Assamese –Sojina, Bengali -Sojne Danta, Gujarati –Saragvo,,Hindi –Sahjan, Kannada –Nuggekayee, Konkani -Mushinga Saang, Malayalam –Muringa, Sigru, Marathi –Shevga, Nepali -Sajiwan Or Swejan, Oriya -Sajana Or Sujuna, Punjabi –Surajana, Sanskrit –Shobhanjana, Tamil -Murungai Maram, Telugu – Mulakkaya, Munaga PREVENTION by increasing the body immunity through proper nourishment. Leaves of drumsticks tree/ plant – Moringa oleifera with common names of sahjan, murunga, moonga, sajina etc. are reported to have significant quantities to supplement nutrition. This plant/ tree is reported to be rich in vit A & C, magnesium, potassium, proteins, calcium and iron, amongst various other dietary constituents. Since these leaves are a common constituent of the daily diet in various parts of our country especially in the southern part for generations, these can be eaten raw or cooked as a part of regular diet. I sincerely wish these benefits you, your organization, family members and friends. Good Luck *Please Note for Suggested Remedial Measures: The formula has been stated to act as immunoenhancers, anti-oxidant and suitable for use in the conditions of viral infections especially having respiratory problems, fever, body ache etc by Dr. M.M.Padhi, Deputy Director (Tech.), Central Council for Research in Ayurveda & Siddha, New Delhi, must work for most of the viral conditions is the opinion of Dr. Y.K. In these uncertain times of combating swine flu, various alternates are doing the rounds. People should be patient and follow the advice of doctors. In Mexico, swine flu is reported to have affected the heart of about two thirds in the related mortality. Given the profile of the patient and the early symptoms, ECG test should be conducted invariably by the consulting physician/ doctor for timely interventions.

A. If the allopathic interventions are delayed or are in-accessible or isolation is suggested or advised for the initial 2 or 5 days then the following option can be availed. If taken alongwith 'TAMIFLU' or similar drugs then a lag period of 3-4 hrs must be ensured/ maintained.

1. COMBINATION FOR A SINGLE DOSE - persons, including children, weighing 40kgs & above
(i) Tulsi Leaves (Holy Basil) (Ocimum tenuiflorum) - 2pcs
(ii) Turmeric Powder (Curcuma longa) - 1.5gm
(iii) Black Pepper Powder (Piper nigrum) - 0.5gm
(iv) Aonwla Powder (Phyllanthus emblica, syn. Emblica officinalis) - 1.0gm
(v) Seeds of Pods - Tree Dried – Drumstick (Moringa Oleifera) - 2pcs
(vi) Ginger Juice (Zingiber officinane) - 2ml
• To be taken twice daily – morning and evening - with a glass of water

2. ON THE ONSET OF FEVER
Warning: Not to be taken by Cardiac/ High Blood Pressure Patients
(i) Take a tablespoon of common salt used in the kitchen
(ii) Pound it to the extent it loses its shine – about 4-5 minutes in a strong vessel Okhali – Pestle Mortar - hamam dasta OR Grind for 2 minutes in a electrical grinder or otherwise
(iii) Roast it on a tava – iron plate for about 12 minutes on average flame of the gas stove burner -small
(iv) Cool and pound/ grind again for about half the time in the first grind – point (ii)
(v) Again roast it on the tava for about 6 minutes and cool– process given in point (iii)
(vi) Add this processed salt, one table spoon, to a glass of water
(vii) Squeeze a lemon into this glass of water with processed salt, stir and drink at the onset of fever and every 12 hours thereafter for a maximum of four times/ 2 days.

B. PREVENTION by increasing the body immunity through proper nourishment
Leaves of drumsticks tree/ plant – Moringa oleifera with common names of sahjan, murunga, moonga, sajina etc. are reported to have significant quantities to supplement (and not replace) nutrition in Vitamin(s) A & C, Magnesium, Potassium, Proteins, Calcium and Iron, amongst various other dietary constituents. Due attention is to be provided to the precautions enlisted herein.

Process: Pluck about 2-3 kg leaves of the drumsticks tree/ plant and dry them in shade. Rub the dried leaves across the sieves/ mesh available in the household for filtering cereals and flour to derive the powder. A tea spoon twice a day for children up to 6years, a table spoon twice a day for children up to 12 years and a tablespoon thrice a day for all above 12 years of age, including lactating/ nursing mothers and pregnant women is suggested, subject to the underlying conditions, namely;
• Pregnant women in the third trimester must avoid drumstick plant/ tree consumption.
• Long term use i.e. more than two to three months continuous consumption of leaves in powder form is lacking necessary back up studies.
• Since these leaves are a common constituent of the daily diet, in the southern part of India for generations, these can be eaten raw or cooked and consumed as a part of regular cooked diet.

I sincerely wish these benefits you, your organization, family members and friends. Good Luck.

All this article is good to keep away from the H1N1 virus. But what hurts me about my country India is, "What preventive measures are being taken by the government or medical hospitals". Why preventive measures were not taken when a kid in "Pune" died? Why we are so ignorant about this disease and take it so easily? Are we waiting for more deaths to happen & then take some actions? Why is government not putting curfew in whole country stopping the transportation from outside. Everything should be stopped to kill the virus. In daily news I just get the news that "So many people are dead" but tell me where is the action taken to prevent it? In India, nothing is organized. People won't learn until and unless they experience something bad. My predictions, 1. More deaths if this is the case if people still go to office, roam, travel. 2. World might vanish off. 3. Scarcity of testing kits & drugs. I request doctors/nurses/government/individual/people/individual to save each and every life. H1N1 is scaring people day by day. Politicians easily say, "All under control, we are equipped". My question to them is "Can you justify it?". Please become serious about this disease. Kill H1N1 before it kills us. Regards, Santhosh S Tuppad

My opinion to protect swine flue is make arrangment like election. All over india put swine flue booth and check each and every people.who ever is infected from swine flue sperate them (isolate them) and do treantment on them.so that un infected people should not get any harm.persons visiting to india should be checked at airport only so that there is no chance of increase this swine flue.kindly put this opinion in front of our health minister.i know it will make some cost but less than cost of election.Hope you will do the needful.
