Can a nursing mother take Clonotril and Levipil?

Q: My 24 years old wife has epilepsy for the past 4 years and she is taking Levipil 500 mg four times daily and half tablet of Clonotril. She has delivered a baby recently. Are there any side effects of these medicines? She is breastfeeding the baby. Please suggest.

A:Both Clonotril (clonazepam) and Levipil (levetiracetam) are strictly prohibited for use by breast-feeding mothers since both these drugs are excreted in human breast milk and adversely affect the baby. Please consult your doctor for alternative medication.
