Does my wife need medicines to control her high BP?

Q: My 34 years old wife was recently discovered with high BP, which is 140/100 mmHg. Though she has been complaining of headaches and nausea often but its only now we got her BP checked and it was found to be high. The doctor has put her on Amlokind - AT tablet every day in the morning. Is the tablet and dosage ok?

A:A blood pressure level of 140/100 mmHg is borderline case for a female patient of 34 years. There are internationally accepted clinical guidelines on the way to manage patients of this type. The procedure involves: (a) measure blood pressure at least two times on each visit in sitting position in at least two visits a week or more apart, (b) re-measure at minimum of two consultations after one and two months, (c) if there are no other risk factors (such as diabetes, high lipid levels etc.), only life style advice should be given such as moderation in coffee intake, regular exercise (such as brisk walk 5 times a week for 45 minutes to cover no less than 4.5 km), low sodium intake and guidance on stress management if applicable apart from weight reduction in obese patients. Such patients need to be re-assessed after 6 months. No drug treatment is required. As, if and when drug treatment is required, there is a rational procedure of giving just one appropriate medicine. Amlokind AT is the brand name of a combination product that contains two drugs: amlodipine and atenolol. Due to the risk of developing diabetes, atenolol is no longer recommended and is to be given only when other medicines are not effective.
