Can my diabetic mother donate her kidney to me?

Q: I am a 27 years old man having kidney disease and am on dialysis. The doctor has advised kidney transplant. My 55 years old mother is having diabetes but the blood sugar level is under control. She has to take medicine for diabetes. She does not have any other problem. Can she donate her kidney?

A:Diabetes is a universally accepted contraindication to live kidney donation. Although your mother's diabetes is under control and she does not have any other problem at present, it puts her at risk of post-surgical complications and future development of kidney failure.
