Is herpes a lifelong infection?

Q: I am a 34 years old male and I underwent HIV and VDRL tests. All came negative but my herpes simplex virus (HSV)-1 and HSV-2, and IgG came positive. How can herpes infection be treated?

A:Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is a lifelong infection. However, if good general health is maintained, with the passage of time the recurrences become less frequent and less severe. Life span of an individual having HSV infection is no different from that of a non-infected person.
