The risk of hypothyroidism are early abortion, fetal abnormality, small baby, preterm labour - and these need to be looked out for as well as regular monitoring for thyroid function tests - quarterly. The medication can be continued even after delivery when the requirements may change. After delivery problems can develop on return of menses and breast feeding in case the thyroid is not under control. Postnatal depression too may become manifest and need treatment.
