Are diabetics forbidden fruits? Not if they make the right choices. Fruits have carbohydrates and a form of natural sugar called fructose, which can raise blood sugar levels.

Fruits can still be part of your meal plan if had in moderation. Fruits are full of minerals, vitamins, and powerful plant compounds called phytochemicals.

Many fruits are high in fibre which helps slow digestion, keeping you fuller and hence keep both your weight and blood sugars in check.

According to the American Diabetes Association, many types of fruit are rich in vitamins and minerals, as well as fibre. While juices can be bad for diabetes, whole fruits are good for an optimal sugar control and overall health.

But as with any other food for diabetics, one needs to be smart about counting crabs and keeping an eye on portion is the key.

Choose fresh or frozen fruit and avoid processed and canned fruits as these will have more carbs and sugars and hence not desirable.

Also, spread your fruit intake over the day. Instead of two servings at a time, have one in the morning and one as a snack.
