Dandruff is a very common problem among children and adults. It is a condition of the scalp which results in a flaky skin, causing itching. Some people experience dandruff seasonally, while others get dandruff nearly all the time.

According to Lifestyle coach Luke Coutinho, dandruff is a symptom of improper nutrition. Here are some more common causes why you may be experiencing an itchy scalp and those embarrassing white flakes.

If your diet includes sugary and processed foods, and lacks sufficient nutritious and wholesome foods, then it may be the reason for dandruff. Make sure your diet includes fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lentils, legumes, nuts and seeds amongst others.

Chronic stress and fatigue can also be the reason why you have dandruff. Symptoms of stress have been shown to aggravate dandruff. Work on managing your stress levels and it may help in reducing it.

Washing your hair with shampoos with harmful chemicals can rob your scalp of sebum, resulting in dandruff. Consult your dermatologist to find out which shampoo suits your scalp and it may help in reducing dandruff.

Dry skin is one of the most common causes of dandruff and if this is the cause you can tell as other places of your body will be most likely dry as well. There are many shampoos that replenish moisture into your scalp and can get rid of dandruff.

Not shampooing your hair regularly could be another cause of dandruff as the oil accumulates and builds up on the skin and can cause dandruff. Shampoo your hair regularly and keep them clean.

Malassezia is a fungus that lives on the scalp and skin of all people. For some, a sensitivity develops which can result in dandruff. To treat this over-the-counter shampoos and following a good skin care routine are also beneficial.

These include overbrushing the hair and creating too much friction with the sensitive skin on the scalp; excessive pressure on the scalp from hats; exposure to dust and dirt and hormonal changes.
